The Cavell Street projects comprise of the Ethnic Minorities
Sewing Enterprise (EMSE) and the Women’s Sewing
Project (WSP), both are gender specific projects which
are accommodated on separate floors of the same building.
The WSP is for Bangladeshi
women and offers training in aspects of clothing manufacture.
There are eight women currently attending the project
where they learn a variety of sewing and craft skills
as well as undertaking commercial sewing work. The women
are collected and dropped back at home in the Working
Well minibus by two members of staff, one is always
female, on the days they are due to attend the project.
The project has close links with
a local agency called Stitches in Time, a tutor from
Stitches in Time comes in once a week to work with the
women on long term creative sewing projects. One such
project that the group recently finished was a large
tapestry that depicted their childhood memories of growing
up in Bangladesh. The women created a visually stunning,
beautiful piece of work, and we think that some of the
individual designs could be marketed on soft furnishings.
We're currently working with Stitches in Time producing
samples and conducting market research in the local
area to see if this would be feasible.
It's exciting time for the WSP so
watch this space!
